About

Dr. Gordon Renwick is a Psychologist with over 30 years of experience in the mental health field. He works with adults, families, and children. Areas in which he has extensive clinical experience include the following: anxiety and mood disorders, trauma, grief, anger, addictions, stress management, ADHD, oppositional disorders, and childhood abuse/neglect. Dr Renwick is long-time meditator, and has recently been involved (as a researcher/therapist) in Compass clinical trials studying the effects of  psilocybin on treatment-resistant depression. He is also involved in clinical trials at UCSD studying psilocybin and its effects on Phantom limb pain.

Although influenced by Humanistic and Existential philosophies, Gordon uses a wide range of therapeutic modalities, including the following:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • EMDR (Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing)
  • Schema Therapy (a blending of therapies including Cognitive, Gestalt, and Psychodynamic)
  • Grief Counseling
  • Play Therapy
  • Internal Family Systems
  • Mindfulness Approaches
  • Family Therapy

Though he is well-grounded in theory, he considers the therapeutic relationship the most important change agent. He knows that if clients do not feel cared for or listened to, the most skillful intervention will be ineffective. In his many years in this field, he has felt honored to participate in his client’s courageous and sometimes difficult journeys back to health.

Dr. Renwick believes everyone has an innate drive for personal growth and wellness, yet obstacles may hinder our natural tendency towards health. Much of his work is helping clients identify, then remove or minimize the negative impact these obstacles have on their self-actualization. Beyond symptom alleviation, he would like to help his clients improve the quality of their lives and cultivate a sense of peace and joy.
